TRICARE Coverage
Yes. TRICARE covers substance use disorder treatment when it’s medically necessary and properly authorized. Covered care can include residential rehabilitation, intensive outpatient programs, therapy, and treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions.
For live-in treatment, TRICARE requires pre-authorization before admission. Its policy sets no annual day limit on residential substance use care, but the plan reviews continued stays at least every 30 days to confirm treatment is still medically necessary.

TRICARE Plans
Your plan type and your sponsor’s status shape two things: whether you need a referral before treatment starts and how costs are shared. Find your plan to see what usually applies.
Most specialty care is coordinated through your primary care manager.
You can see any TRICARE-authorized provider.
Generally follows TRICARE Select rules for behavioral health care.
Rules match the option you purchased.
Medicare usually pays first. Healing Pines doesn’t accept Medicare, so call us to talk through your options.
Nonemergency care usually starts at a military hospital or clinic.
Know what your plan covers, what approval you need, and what you may owe before day one.
Costs
Your share of the cost depends on your plan, your sponsor’s status, and whether care is in-network. We don’t publish flat prices because every family’s coverage is different.
After verification, our team can walk you through what you’re likely to owe and what to ask TRICARE.
| Cost Driver | Why It Matters | What to Ask |
|---|---|---|
| Plan type | Prime, Select, Reserve Select, and For Life each handle cost-shares differently. | Which cost-share applies to residential care and IOP? |
| Sponsor status | Active duty families, retirees, and Guard or Reserve members have different rules and costs. | How does my sponsor’s status change what I pay? |
| Network status | Network providers usually mean lower out-of-pocket costs and simpler billing. | Is this program in my network, and what changes if it isn’t? |
| Deductible and catastrophic cap | Most plans have an annual deductible and a catastrophic cap that limits your yearly costs for covered care. | How much of my deductible and cap is already met this year? |
| Level of care and length of stay | More intensive or longer care can mean more covered days and a larger total cost-share. | How often will my stay be reviewed for continued approval? |
If TRICARE doesn’t cover everything, we offer private-pay options and hardship rates for families who qualify.

Approvals
Pre-authorization is TRICARE’s advance approval for planned care. Residential rehab always needs it, because planned admissions aren’t treated as emergencies. Gathering the right records early is the fastest way to a decision.
