People may often feel lost when dealing with life’s challenges or trying to heal from their past. Individual therapy is crucial because of this. Anyone wishing to rediscover themselves, let go of emotional triggers, and develop coping mechanisms can feel comfortable in individual counseling.
At Healing Pines Recovery, each man is paired with a master’s-level clinician for one-on-one sessions designed around his specific recovery goals, the substances or behaviors he is working to leave behind, and the emotional and mental health challenges underneath them.
Individual therapy is a confidential session between a man in treatment and a credentialed therapist trained to help him work through what is driving his substance use.
For the men we work with, individual therapy is rarely about a single problem. It is where unresolved trauma, untreated co-occurring mental health conditions, suppressed grief, identity questions, family dynamics, and the cumulative weight of years of substance use all surface and get worked through with someone trained to hold that weight clinically. Our master’s-level clinicians tailor each session to the man in front of them.

We offer supportive inpatient rehab and residential treatment at our beautiful home in the scenic small town of Elizabeth, Colorado.
For individuals struggling with substance abuse and mental health (dual diagnosis) we offer comprehensive therapeutic modalities.
Otherwise referred to as psychotherapy, individual therapy allows people to express their concerns and challenges in a safe setting. A therapeutic relationship is free from judgment and meant to support the patient. In individual therapy, a person can openly discuss any challenges or problems. At the same time, they receive objective feedback and support from a qualified therapist.
Attending to your emotional and mental well-being in individual therapy is essential to self-care. Healing Pines Recovery provides a supportive, non-judgmental environment where you can openly discuss your struggles and receive help.
Individualized therapy is for anyone seeking improvement in their life. It can be customized to meet the unique demands of each person. The highly trained therapy professionals at Healing Pines Recovery have a great deal of experience with the following:
For most men, individual therapy is also paired with group therapy and family therapy, so the work done one-on-one is reinforced and tested in real relationships.
We work with most major commercial insurance plans which can help cover up to 100% of the costs associated with treatment.
At Healing Pines, every man is matched with an individual therapist during admissions, based on the therapist’s clinical specialties and the issues the client is bringing in. Once that pairing is set, sessions follow a clear sequence. The content of each session stays flexible to whatever the man is working through that week.
The first sessions focus on building safety and trust, gathering history, and clarifying treatment goals. From there, the work shifts toward direct engagement with what is driving the substance use: trauma, mental health symptoms, grief, identity, relational patterns. Each man’s therapist tracks progress against his goals, adjusts the approach as treatment progresses, and holds clinical accountability for his care. Confidentiality is protected at every stage.
Individual therapy at Healing Pines is not a single technique. Our clinicians draw from several evidence-based approaches, choosing what fits the man and the issue in front of them, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed approaches that fit the work the man in front of them is doing.
Most men complete a 30 to 45-day inpatient stay at Healing Pines. Within that, individual therapy sessions happen multiple times per week, alongside group therapy, family therapy, and the holistic and experiential modalities we offer onsite. The exact frequency depends on each man’s clinical needs and the treatment plan his therapist designs with him.
Individual therapy does not end at discharge. The work most men start in residential treatment continues through our intensive outpatient program (IOP) and aftercare, where the same one-on-one approach carries forward at a different cadence. Recovery is a long arc, and the foundation built through residential individual therapy is meant to support a man for years, not weeks.
Individual therapy is a clinically supported approach for a wide range of mental, emotional, and behavioral health concerns. At Healing Pines, men frequently work through the following in individual sessions:

Before treatment begins, a therapist determines the frequency and type of therapy that would be best. A therapist will then establish a treatment plan before meeting with the client.
An expert in therapy chooses the frequency and kind of therapy that will work best for the patient before treatment starts. They create a personalized treatment plan before sessions with the client.
During the first meeting, a therapist’s goal is to establish a feeling of safety and trust. They review the patient’s medical history and ask about their general physical, emotional, and mental health. A connection is formed through conversation, and therapy objectives are established.
The therapist encourages the patient to do most of the talking during the first meetings. Therapists do this to comprehend better what the patient is going through.
Individual counseling is an effective treatment for mental, emotional, and behavioral health problems. The advantages listed below may result from individual counseling:

Individual therapy is one-on-one, confidential, and tailored to issues that are often too personal to work through in a group setting: childhood trauma, identity, grief, and the deeper roots of substance use.
Group therapy is where the work done in individual sessions gets tested and reinforced through shared experience with other men in recovery. Both are core to our program, and each reinforces the other in ways that neither could on its own.
Most men meet with their individual therapist multiple times per week during their 30 to 45-day inpatient stay. The exact frequency depends on clinical needs, the issues being worked through, and the treatment plan your therapist designs with you. Frequency can shift up or down at any point in treatment based on what you are working through that week.
Yes. Continuity matters in trauma and dual-diagnosis work, so we pair each man with a primary therapist at admission and keep that pairing for the duration of treatment. If a different clinical specialty is needed, your primary therapist may bring in a colleague. The relationship that anchors your care stays consistent.
Family members are not present in individual therapy sessions, which are confidential between you and your therapist. They can be involved through dedicated family therapy sessions and family education programming, which run alongside individual therapy throughout your stay. Many of the men we treat find the combination of individual and family work is what makes the difference long term.
Yes. Sessions are protected by therapist-client confidentiality and HIPAA, and your therapist has a professional and legal obligation to protect what you share with them. The exceptions are the standard ones: risk of imminent harm to self or others, or a court order. Your therapist will explain them clearly in your first session.
Most of the men who come to Healing Pines have limited or no prior therapy experience, and our program is designed with that in mind. Your therapist will move at your pace, build trust before pressing into harder material, and explain each step of the work as you go. Showing up is enough. Your therapist will handle the rest.
Yes. The individual therapy work most men start in residential treatment continues through our intensive outpatient program (IOP) and aftercare, where the same one-on-one approach carries forward at a different cadence. We help every man transition from residential to outpatient care so the foundation built during inpatient treatment continues to support him long after discharge.
