Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder. Affecting about 1 in 40 US adults, the condition is characterized by alternating periods of mania or hypomania and depression. Due to the nature of the condition, Bipolar Disorder can be hard to detect and might first be diagnosed as depression or another condition.
The two main presentations or “types” of Bipolar Disorder are Bipolar 1 disorder and Bipolar 2 disorder. Both conditions are treatable, but they present slightly differently. Here is the main difference between the two:
Cyclothymia is another condition that may be diagnosed in the instance that a person has undergone alternating periods of manic or hypomanic and depressive symptoms that do not meet the complete criteria for major depressive or manic and hypomanic episodes.
Depression can present in many different ways. During a depressive episode, you or the man in your life may experience symptoms such as the following:
Other symptoms, like irritability, can also occur during a depressive episode. Some people may be able to hide symptoms of depression and continue their responsibilities as usual; others may struggle to do so.
During a manic or hypomanic episode, the signs you notice in yourself or a loved one might vary substantially. Hypomania is a lower-level form of mania where symptoms are less severe. During an episode of mania or hypomania, you or the man in your life may experience symptoms such as the following:
Some people with Bipolar Disorder may also experience paranoia, delusions, or hallucinations during manic episodes.
